Bifocal contact lenses- my experience
I recently tried for wearing bifocal contact lenses. I wear single vision contact lenses all the time, when I was young. I like their glasses, they gave me excellent vision glasses, and they are comfortable.
I was prescribed my first pair of contact lenses about 20 years old (… I was in Australia four million baby boomers). They were hard lenses; they almost required a little care, and provided superior vision for many years.
My next pair of eye contact lenses is a relatively new soft contact lens 6 or 7 years. Soft lenses revolution did not cause corneal distortion is a problem with the previous hard lenses. However, the new soft lenses require substantial maintenance. They must be boiled and soaked, and so more trouble than they are worth more than a year later, I went back to wear glasses.
Recently I came from a single focus glasses to correct my myopia to multifocal lenses come with my presbyopia (syndrome, many people experience as they age, they found their arms not long enough to read a book or a menu!). I have been very satisfaction with the multi-focal glasses, I wear all the time, because I can not see a lot of stuff without wearing glass and I stay until recently.
I like surfing, swimming, and when I on leave, we are planning to travel to Tonga, I hope I can go diving to see coral and tropical fish, so I think I will try to bifocal optical lenses to be able to swim at the same time to see clearly!
So I went to the optometrist. He was very helpful, and explained that because of my myopia, astigmatism and presbyopia in combination, it is not possible to achieve the vision I have with the bifocal optical lenses I received. However, because I would like to try for distance vision lenses, I am willing to give them a chance.
He ordered some disposable ACUVUE bifocal contact lenses and on the next day I try them on.
With the bifocal contact lenses one lens is designed for a long-distance vision and other lens are designed for reading.
This is a bit uncomfortable to my eyes, then after so many years, but I wore them without too much difficult. Weird thing was of one eye to see distant objects and close one eye to see thing.
I gave one to bifocal contact lenses a tried while using the computer – but it just did not work for me. Distance is not right. I can read a book with good vision, but when I use the computer, my distance is too far to concentrate on the screen, and I can not sit closer to overcome this problem, because my monitor is big size.
I’ve seen another optometrist, but there is no other pair of bifocal contact lens solution to me. I tried about a month ago, they abandoned them and I ordered a new pair of glasses.
I have use contact lenses again, if I intend on leave, and will not use the computer all the time, but I do not think they are practical for daily use. I think the question for me is not able to focus of on 1 object of the two eyes.
About the only time when I find them useful in my reading this is not their objective – I want more than distance for reading from the bifocal contact lenses. Nevertheless, they serve the purpose, when I was snorkeling and swimming!
